Hokkaido Christmas Fantasy and Winter Getaway in Hakodate, Japan

Hakodate in Japan is the hub of the southern section of Hokkaido, Japan. The area known as Hakodate starts at the base of Mount Hakodate-yama and extends across to the Tsugaru Strait.

Hakodate is packed with Japanese sites of historical significance and attractions unique to Japanese culture, such as onsen (hot springs). During winter, Hakodate has additional attractions and is known for hosting the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy.

The port at the bay area is the popular place for viewing the Christmas lights which attract visitors to Hakodate in Japan every year. The sparkling nighttime view of Hakodate is said to be one of the three best night views around the world.

The night lights of Naples in Italy are also considered one of the three most beautiful night lights, as are the lights of Hong Kong. The Hakodate Christmas Fantasy started 12 years ago in Hokkaido. The event begins on December 1st and activities come to a climax on December 25th with the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The Hakodate Christmas tree is lit with 50,000 light bulbs. The Christmas tree is located in the bay area and is presented to the residents of Hakodate as a gift every year, from the Canadian city of Halifax. Halifax is the sister city of Hakodate.

During the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy, visitors can also enjoy a beautiful fireworks display. The fireworks display is held on every night of the Christmas Fantasy. Visitors, who want to get the best view of the Hakodate night lights during the period, can take the cable car up to the peak of Mount Hakodate. The best time to do this is between 30 minutes and two hours after sunset.
